Development

Some people experience change and development as something threatening. Others see it as something worthwhile in itself. Regardless of what you think, change is something you can’t avoid. It goes on all the time and everywhere.

I am often engaged to follow an organization throughout a developmental phase. My role is to keep the group together and make sure it strives toward the goal at a steady pace. New routines and ways of working are created along the way to better and more effectively reach the final destination.

Method development starts with understanding

Organization and international development cooperation are where I have made my own particular contribution. The instruments and methods I have helped construct lead to simpler ways of making changes and reaching goals.

I see two main tasks for my work with method development; understanding what is to be accomplished, and building on the systems and experience that already exist.

A sense of security

Leading a development project means working towards the goals that have been set up, but it is just as important to take care of the people involved.

A recurring task for me is working with the training of project leaders in different cultural contexts, among others South and Central America, East Africa and China. Working in different countries has strengthened my conviction that education and capacity development to a great degree are about giving people a sense of security. This often comes when they gain insight into how change and development unfold, and when they can identify recurring patterns of behavior are typical for people in the middle of a change.

Coaching without ready answers

Project leaders and others responsible for development work have oftenw a very lonely job. That is why I sometimes am engaged as a coach or support for people who are weighed down by responsibility.

During coaching sessions we discuss challenges and choices that must be made: without me giving any ready answers. Instead, we talk in a liberating way that opens new ways of creative thinking for my clients. I know that the person who has the problem also has the answer. As an outsider, I stimulate by providing the necessary questions and comments.

Coaching may consist of just one or a few sessions, or it can stretch out over a longer period of time.
